Fun runs, mayor making and music on offer today




Lots to see and do in Newbury and beyond

Lots of leg-stretchers and fun packed runs have sprung up around Newbury and beyond today (Sunday), alongside Thatcham's mayor making this afternoon, music and birdwatching.

The Welford and Wickham 10k race sets off at 10am today at the Welford Estate - signed from the car park.

A charity fundraising run also takes place at Park House School, Wash Common, Newbury, between 12.15pm and 4.30pm, alongside a fun day, with side shows, food and music, and dog show, entries £1 in aid of CLIC Sargent and school funds (PHSA), with a wide range of prizes, for classes ranging from coolest pup, to best six legs and fancy dress (dog, or dog and handler), entries on the day no later than 15 minutes prior to each class.

Those preferring a stroll should head for a West Berkshire Ramblers meeting at 10am, Bell Street car park, Whitchurch, to follow the Mill Trail, with a walk beside the River Test, which passes five historic mills, complete with 45 minute coffee break.

Over in Pewsey village, from 11.30am to 4.30pm, a free and creatively open Pewsey Vale Arts walk takes place.

Alternatively Newbury District Ornithological Club hosts a full day visit by car for summer nesting birds, departing Newbury 8am, telephone in advance for meeting place details 01488 668482.

For something completely different, meet Thatcham's new mayor this afternoon, after the traditional mayor making ceremony starts at 3pm.

Outgoing mayor, Gary Johnson (Lib Dem), will pass on the chain of office to his successor at the mayor making ceremony at the Frank Hutchings Community Hall.

Hermitage villagers will be raising funds for the Nepal earthquake appeal between 3pm and 5pm at their new village hall in Pinewood Crescent, with afternoon teas, coffee, cakes, a second-hand book sale, a tombola and bric-a-brac sale.

Music lovers can relax this afternoon in Aldermaston, between 3pm and 5.30pm, with an interval, at the William Penney Theatre, Aldermaston Concert Centre, AWE, with Nicholas Martin on the electronic organ. Tickets £6.50 telephone 0118 9323971.
