Fundraising cycle ride for life-saving Gambian vegetable garden

Inspired by Trish Butler’s trip to Gambia, friends, Samantha Bryant and Trish Hanna agreed to join her on Saturday (22) for the 63 mile ride.
“It’s a ridiculously tough challenge for us (we are perhaps not the fittest bunch) but we are quite excited about the mini adventure and we are all pretty determined,” said Trish Butler.
The three girls hope to raise £2,000, which will go to the women of Seffoe, a small village who have maintained a successful vegetable garden which is a vital supply of food and a valuable source of income.
Sadly, the garden needs to be relocated as the water supply is too salty and is damaging the vegetables.
The money raised will go towards building fencing to protect the plants from animals, and to dig six wells within the newly identified garden site.
Last April, Trish Butler stayed in a small village nearby, Gunjur, and was both shocked and inspired by their life-style.
Although they were living in poverty, with inadequate healthcare, housing and education: “the people of Gunjur get on with their everyday lives, with what appears to be a positive and happy attitude,” she said.
So far this year Trish Butler has raised £484 by selling personal items.
She is also planning a cake sale later in the year.
