Further calls for crossing after pedestrian's death

Campaigners say the tragic death of a pedestrian on the A4 last Friday is more proof of the need for a crossing

THE tragic death of a pedestrian who was hit by a van on the A4 last Friday is more proof of the need for a pedestrian crossing on the dangerous stretch of road, say campaigners.

The pedestrian, who has been named as Padworth man, Richard Agar, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 41-year-old was hit by a white Volkswagen Transporter van on the A4 Bath Road, close to the junction with Grange Lane in Padworth at around 6.30pm on Friday.

An inquest into Mr Agar's death was opened and adjourned this week with a full inquest to be held at a later date.

No arrests have been made in relation to the crash but police have asked for witnesses to come forward.

The tragedy follows another fatal accident on the same stretch of road in Padworth in November last year.

During that incident, Walter Bunyard, aged 82, from The Crescent, Padworth, was killed after his wife walked into the path of an oncoming car whilst pushing his wheelchair.

Mr Bunyard's death sparked a petition for a pedestrian crossing in Padworth Lane, which is situated off the A4.

That crossing was built in September but residents are still campaigning for a crossing on the A4.

Dr Janis Daly, from The Crescent, said the matter was even more pressing following Friday's fatality.

“Something needs to be done,” she said. “We need a proper crossing and this is something we will pursue.

“We have been particularly anxious because there are no crossings along the A4. We are dependant on these islands to cross the road.”

West Berkshire councillor Mollie Lock (Lib Dem, Mortimer), who lodged the petition for a pedestrian crossing in Padworth Lane, said: “I am very distressed to hear that yet another accident has happened on this incredibly dangerous stretch of road.

“There is no crossing on this part of the A4 yet children still have to cross the road when they get off their school bus. It's not even safe to get out of your car.”

Keith Ulyatt, public relations manager at West Berkshire Council said: “There is a suggestion to build a pedestrian refuge on the A4 near its junction with Grange Lane.

“Discussions on this are currently taking place and following those, designs can be drawn up and, if approved, there is the possibility of construction in the new year.”

With regards to last Friday's accident, he added: “The police are investigating and will report in due course, and it would be inappropriate to speculate on the cause of the accident before then. “
