Further delays ahead for Newbury motorists
Off peak A339 closures planned for the next week
FURTHER lane closures on the A339 look likely to cause more misery for Newbury motorists today (Wednesday) following on from the severe delays experienced by drivers yesterday.
Newbury's road network went into meltdown during Tuesday lunchtime owing to the single lane closure on the northbound carriageway between Sainsbury's and the Robin Hood roundabout.
Motorists travelling north were stuck in tailbacks as far as the Sandelford link (pictured above), while roads through the town centre also became gridlocked.
However West Berkshire Council plan to close a second lane on the northbound carriageway for the next week with traffic moved onto the other side of the road in a contra-flow arrangement, meaning one of the major routes through Newbury will be reduced to a single lane in both directions.
The closures are expected to be in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm until October 5.
The closure will allow the council to carry out resurfacing work on the busy dual carriageway as part of the ongoing widening of the A339.
The roadworks, which started in February will also see the installation of a new junction leading from the A339 into the London Road Industrial Estate.
