Fury over plans to close Hungerford Library

Campaigners turn out in force to voice their anger

THREATS to axe Hungerford library have been met with an initial reaction of anger and dismay.

But this was soon replaced by determined action as residents rallied to prevent its loss.

An online petition opposing the closure has already attracted more than 500 signatures.

And an impromptu meeting was scheduled at the Three Swans in the town’s High Street on Wednesday.

Within minutes, it was standing room only as the room began to fill up with men, women and children.

It was decided to form a campaign group – Friends of Hungerford Library – and a committee was formed comprising Geraldine Fost, Helen Simpson, Shelagh Parry, Joanna Price, Penny Brookman, Maria Leon and new Hungerford town councillor Keith Knight.

Many gave vent to their anger at the closure proposals and expressed doubt about the validity of any consultation process.

Ms Fost, the founder of the Hungerford Bookshop in 1980, said: “How can we be designated a rural service centre by the district council if they take away our buses and library? They can’t have it both ways.”

Ms Simpson said: “The library is the heart of the town.

“Just take one example, the Ladies’ Craft Group on Friday mornings. It’s attended by more than 30 people and some people who have been bereaved use it as a social group.

“The library helps makes Hungerford unique, it’s a good example of community spirit. It’s our community centre.”
