Fury over skate park graffiti

Public asked to be vigilant for vandals

VANDALS have caused major damage to the skate park in Victoria Park, daubing slogans over equipment and trees.

The damage occurred between 6pm on Monday, May 23, and 9.30am the following day.

A spokesman for Newbury Town Council, Granville Taylor, said: “It was really quite bad this time. There were Nazi symbols, slogans associated with heroin use and foul language.

“There was no ‘tag’, such as used by so-called graffiti artists, so it was just wanton vandalism.

“Fortunately the skate park users police it themselves so it’s only happened three times before in the six years the facility has been there.”

Mr Taylor said skateboarders took to social media to urge anyone who knew the culprits to inform police.

He said: “They’ve been on the lookout themselves because it’s their facility and they said no skateboarder would have done it.”

The damage was cleaned off for free by neighbourhood wardens from Newbury and Thatcham, but Mr Taylor pointed out: “That service is being cut from June and to have the graffiti removed professionally will cost hundreds of pounds.

“Even worse is the damage done to the surface of the skatepark by pressure washing – it causes damage to the glaze on the concrete and the surface can start to crack.”

The graffiti was daubed across the skate bowls, chutes and even on trees and Mr Taylor said: “It would have been done late at night after dark because it would have taken some considerable time and effort.”

He appealed for anyone who sees anyone creating graffiti to call police immediately.

If anyone has any information they should contact police via the non emergency 101 number.
