Hungerford skate park: The 'A's have it

THE verdict on the future of Hungerford skate park is in.

And the public vote is for Option A.

The decision follows a public consultation in which contractors offered two different design proposals for the facility at Bulpit Lane.

Option B would have featured a street facility and combi bowl.

Contractors said of this option: "The main part of the park will suit all ages but the bowl complex will provide an exciting challenge for more advanced riders."

Option A – the winning option – will feature a street facility, mini ramp and pumptrack.

The contractors stated: "This will suit all ages with a good variety of challenges and will particularly cater for the early and intermediate users as well as having more demanding objects for the more confident."

Potential users and parents filled in a questionnaire to select their favoured option.

The survey closed on Thursday, December 1.

At a full town council meeting on Monday night, December 5, Hungerford mayor Helen Simpson revealed: "Option A received the biggest proportion of the public vote."

The final tally was as follows: Option A - 125 votes; Option B - 87 votes.

Town councillor John Downe told the meeting: "What was impressive about the comments, and there were obviously pros and cons expressed, was that lots of people favoured Option A because it was suitable for a greater age and ability range."

Mrs Simpson agreed that Option A would suit a larger range and would be better for busy mothers contending with younger children, perhaps in a pushchair, while older siblings used the facilities.

She said that she was delighted with the result of the consultation and was looking forward to seeing the project started, adding: "I'm really pleased that the public obviously are, too."

Mrs Simpson proposed that Hungerford Town Council formally instruct the contractors to now press ahead with Option A.

The motion, seconded by Alistair Fyfe, was carried unanimously.
