Wimbledon fever hits Newbury as eager fans enjoy free open day at Newbury Tennis Club
Dozens of eager tennis fans were given a chance to try out their skills at an open day in Newbury recently.
And so, on Sunday, July 3 – while planned matches were being played at Wimbledon on ‘Middle Sunday’ for the first time – local players were taking to the courts at Newbury Tennis Club for a free taster day as part of the Great British Tennis Weekend.
Held at the club’s Poplar Place courts, the event ran from 10am until 1pm and gave visitors the opportunity to meet the team and other club members while enjoying a “high energy coaching experience”.
Development manager at the National Tennis Association Tony Kerr said: “The day went well, with new players taking their first steps on court and the Newbury Tennis Club Great British Tennis Weekend encouraging new players of all ages to give tennis a go.
“The open day proved to be a successful way of showing people what fun can be had on court.
“The open day offered tennis to people of all ages and local members came down to show their support and create that positive community orientated atmosphere.”
The coaching team of Dan Lampton, James Marsh and Nick Barrow were there to talk to people about what they can offer to players of all ages and abilities.
Mr Kerr said that the sport is becoming “more and more popular in and around Newbury”.
A Newbury and Thatcham Community Tennis membership is available for £45, which allows players to book courts at three venues in the area – Newbury Tennis Club, Victoria Park and Thatcham Tennis Club.
