THE Newbury branch of troubled retailer Game Group, based in Northbrook Street, was is still trading despite the company officially going into administration, but the Gamestation store, also in Northbrook Street, has closed down.
Hours after announcing the news, the administrators at Price Waterhouse Coopers shut 277 of the 600 chain’s stores.
The group first hit trouble after several of its large suppliers refused to send stock of eagerly awaited titles such as Mass Effect 3, Mario Party 9 and Street Fighter X Tekken.
It is thought the company faces a £21m rent bill, but several parties have expressed an interest in acquiring the remaining stores.
