Gary's only here for the beard
It's a reverse headshave!
WE’VE all heard of charity head shaves – but Hungerford postman Gary Waterman is doing it in reverse.
For years, the 48-year-old has been a chrome dome by choice, meticulously shaving his pate along with his face.
But on September 1 last year, Mr Waterman vowed not to shave or trim his beard for 12 months.
And he is keeping a photographic record, posting regular snapshots of the results online.
The father of three and grandfather of one said: “I’m not shaving or having a haircut for a year – no trimming or tidying it up at all, apart from around my mouth for hygiene reasons.
“Normally I’m clean shaven on my face and head.
“Although I have a full head of hair I’ve been shaving it bald for 16 years... in fact my wife Sue has never seen me with hair.”
He added: “Last August I decided to do something crazy for charity and at 48 years old I can’t run up a mountain or swim the Channel.
“So I came up with this challenge.
“We all know someone who has been affected by cancer.
“I’m taking photos every day and hope to morph them into a film that shows my hair and beard growth in a time lapse.
“Every Monday I post the weekly photos on my Facebook page ‘Close Shave’ and on my Cancer Research ‘Just Giving’ page.”
Mr Waterman’s challenge will end on September 3 this year at a grand charity night, to be held at Hungerford Town Football Club.
There, he will have the full treatment, being shaved with a cut-throat razor by Kristen Franklin from The Gentleman’s Barber Shop in Hungerford High Street.
There will be entertainment from rock band Fubar and Dickie Deejay.
