Gas leak the cause for Market Street closure, West Berkshire Council reveals

A gas leak was the reason for this morning's Market Street closure, West Berkshire Council has stated.

The closure caused heavy traffic throughout central Newbury, gridlocking the town centre and roads such as the A339 and the A343.

This is the second time this year that a gas leak has forced the emergency closure of a road that was due to have lengthy road works.

Market Street was due to be closed for the next two weeks but the closure has been postponed until the summer.

A closure will however be in place from midnight, April 14 until midnight, April 16 to facilitate the dis-assembly of a tower crane.
