Newbury gas leak fixed, but more traffic delays expected

The busy junction of Kings Road/Boundary Road and Hambridge Road in Newbury has been shut since Sunday (January 22) following a suspected gas pipe leak.

SGN reports the leak has now been repaired, but essential roadworks originally planned for January 23 will begin from Monday (January 30).

The works, which caused traffic gridlocks in Newbury last year, are expected to last up to 12 weeks, causing further closures and delays.

West Berkshire Council released an online statement yesterday evening reading: "This work has been completed earlier than scheduled, which we are grateful for.

"Resurfacing of the road for the work SGN had to carry out will be completed today, however the tarmac needs to set before vehicles can drive over it.

"Once the material has cured, the closure can then be lifted and the roads will return to normal overnight."

But they added: "From Monday, the original planned essential roadworks will commence.

"This is to allow Cognition Land and Water Limited to carry out highway and drainage improvements associated with the development of the adjacent former Sterling Cables site.

"Advanced warning signs will all change accordingly so that road users know that Cognition's works are to commence.

"The multi-way signals and directional closure of Boundary Road South required for these works will be set up on site after the morning peak on Monday.

"In advance, we want to thank residents, businesses and commuters for their patience throughout the works but please do allow extra time for your journey from Monday."
