GBH on The Nightingales estate in Newbury – trial update

A “TERRIFIED” witness to violent mayhem on a housing estate told how crowds gathered to film the violence on their iPhones.

One man - Callum Brown - had his head stoved in with baseball bats, Reading Crown Court has heard.

Some of the accused then found another victim, said to be Oliver Mace.

Jake Bozarth, Dwayne Toussaint and Jake Blandford, all aged 18 and 19, who lived on The Nightingales estate in Newbury where the mayhem happened, deny causing Mr Brown grievous bodily harm with intent on May 8 last year.

All three also deny violent disorder; Mr Blandford and Mr Toussaint deny a second instance of violent disorder while each defendant denies possessing offensive weapons in the form of baseball bats or metal poles.

Prosecution witness Amy Walpole said she was at home on the estate with her mother, Heidi, and boyfriend when they heard shouting outside.

She said: “There were people videoing things.

“I saw, like, a bat and, like, an extendable baton thing.

“More people came out to watch.

“I recognised a female, Georgia Mace; she was with a group of males.

“One of the people she was with got hit.

“I saw someone with a crutch swing it about as a weapon.

“(Mr Mace) tried to run away but he got pinned down.

“I recognised Dwayne (Toussaint) chasing.”

She added: “About four or five people were chasing (Mr Mace) and hitting him - I was terrified.

“I saw (Mr Mace) stagger off up the road towards Dickens Walk.

“I told Mum to call the police.”

The court heard Ms Walpole said in a statement that, during the violence, “the area was flooded with younger boys, say, teenagers.”
