Get ready to Kill Keith

Cheggers plays dead in new comedy horror filmed partly in Newbury

ANYONE who has ever wished a horrible death upon the legions of irritating TV presenters may want to take note of a new movie filmed in West Berkshire.

Called Kill Keith, and starring one of West Berkshire's most famous sons, Keith Chegwin, the film concerns a serial killer who makes a habit of dispatching well known (if not well-loved) breakfast show hosts in a variety of gruesome and inventive ways.

The film was shot in several locations including Newbury high street and a farm in Leckhampstead, which was also the stage for its distinctive film poster featuring a yellow track-suited Chegwin mocked up as Hollywood star Uma Thurman in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill.

Highclere resident Chegwin told Newburytoday.co.uk he knew director Andrew Thompson from their years together in radio and was sold on the idea from the very beginning.

“We went for a coffee on Oxford and he had this title for a film, didn't know what it would be about, but six months later they showed me the script and I have never laughed so much in all my life, I thought it was fantastic.

“They went though my phonebook and got all my mates in, Joe Pasquale, Russell Grant, Tony Blackburn, they are the kind of people who don't mind having the mickey taken out of them, but can also act. Tony Blackburn gives the performance of his life during his death scene!”

The TV stars all gave their time for free to work on the low-budget film, which took around three months to shoot.

He said the tracksuit was specially made in China, and with his acting career on the rise perhaps a call from Tarantino may one day be a reality.

Described as Richard and Judy meets Saw, director Thompson said he hoped audiences would enjoy the mix of cheesy breakfast show celebrities and gory deaths.

“I love the idea of combining the world of horror and the world of horror with breakfast TV and breakfast TV presenters,” he said.

“I have produced a number of films and I have got to say it was the most fun I have ever had on a film set, we had such good fun.

“They don't take themselves too seriously and that is the key, it was all tongue-in-cheek and they absolutely loved it.

“Keith was so up for it, putting him in the Uma Thurman tracksuit was great fun.”

Newbury's Northbrook Street and the Broadway area of the town centre were used for several shots as well as the Leckhampstead farm and Pinewood Studios in London.

The film opens in cinemas from November 11.
