Ghost walk explores Thatcham's dark side

More than one hundred people explored Thatcham’s dark side last week at an evening ghost walk under the stars.

Tales of ghosts and ghouls were shared as around 180 people, of all ages, joined amateur dramatics group KATS for a guided tour of the town.

Walkers met at St Mary’s Church at around 8pm for the behind the scenes tour, led by KATS member Mike Cole.

Mr Cole said: “We had a very nice response. There was around 150 people but we kept recruiting people along the way who came and said ‘what is this then?’ and we got around 180 people.

“This is the biggest one [ghost walk] we have had. We have had around five or six up until Covid. In 2016 we had 131 people but this year has taken over.”

“Luckily I have a loud voice,” he laughed.

Witches, wizards, nuns and even a mad butcher took to the streets to put on a performance the walkers will never forget.

Mayor of Thatcham Jeff Brooks said: “It is great fun. KATS do very well.

“It’s just fun, there’s nothing real about it.

“It’s got a good following now. It is a hoot, it really is.

“You don’t take it seriously, you just go along with it.”

The event was part of the Thatcham Festival, which continues until October 23.
