Giant steps in Newbury
After strange happenings starting earlier in the week at Aldworth Giant Fair and the summoning on Snelsmore Common, as darkness fell, a large crowd braved the drizzle to line Northbrook Street to greet the giant, hidden in the walls of Aldworth Church for hundreds of years before finally arising and trekking the 10 miles to Newbury to face his destiny.
A macabre rock and roll band atop a double decker bus processed up Northbrook Street, flanked by skeletal crows – the devil’s stiltwalking acolytes - heralding the arrival at the Market Place of John, a massive puppet, to face his demons.
There the spiritual creatures of the forest came to his aid and he rose, a little soggy from the downpour, but without fear.
