Girls approached by man in Tilehurst

At about 7pm, two girls, aged six and eight, were playing near to the junction of Ringwood Road and Romsey Road, when they were approached by a man who was with a small child.
The girls ran to the home of the six-year-old girl who told her parents that the man had tried to grab her hand and the parents subsequently contacted the police.
Officers attended and carried out a full area search and house to house enquiries.
Speaking last night, DI Liz Kirk said: “Although the investigation is at an early stage, there is nothing to suggest that the man tried to take the girls from the area or lead them away.
“The girls involved will be spoken to tomorrow by specially trained officers to establish exactly what happened and whether any offences have occurred.
“This incident happened in broad daylight in a busy area and I am keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or any suspicious activity.
"Reports of this nature are rare and can be worrying for the community, however I would like to reassure them that this is believed to be an isolated incident and we are working hard to establish exactly what happened this evening.”
Anyone with any information about the incident should contact DI Kirk or DS Dave Turton on the non-emergency number on 101, quoting URN 1333 29/6 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org
