Going...going...gone - Kersey Crescent flats are demolished
The flats were pulled down as part of a joint venture between Sovereign Housing and David Wilson Homes, which will see a mixture of 78 new houses and flats for rent built on the site.
The new homes will be located alongside the A4 Bath Road, one of the main entry points into Newbury.
Sovereign has wanted to redevelop the site since the early 2000s since the flats had become unpopular, difficult to let, and required a great deal of investment.
However, changes to the funding regime for affordable homes meant redevelopment had to be put on hold, and for the past few years, they have been used to provide temporary accommodation for families at risk of homelessness.
Councillor Paul Bryant, who represents the area on the district council, said: “It’s fantastic to see it coming down. The flats were well outdated and they were ugly.”
Local resident Louise Bolton has a particular connection to the old flats – her daughter Hannah was born there 21 years ago. She said: “I’m quite excited to see the flats coming down and then the new homes going up, but there are also a lot of memories. I feel sad and happy at the same time.”
Paul Crispin, Managing Director of David Wilson Homes, said it will be laying the foundations for the show homes in the next couple of weeks, and aim to have homes for sale early in the New Year.
Students from Newbury College, who are documenting the regeneration of Kersey Crescent, filmed the demolition and will continue recording progress until the new homes are built.
