Gold medal swimmer returns to Theale school
Adam Barrett scooped a gold medal in the 4x100 metre England men’s medley relay team at this year’s games in Glasgow. The 22-year-old, who specialises in butterfly and freestyle, grew up in Tilehurst and attended Theale Green School between 2003 and 2010.
The Commonwealth and European championship medallist took time out from his training at Loughborough University and dropped in to inspire pupils at his former school recently.
He described his journey from the classroom to gold medallist; encouraging pupils to follow their dream, work hard and never accept second best.
Speaking of his time at Theale Green, Mr Barrett said the pupils were fortunate to have such committed teachers at the school.
He said: “I have some amazing memories from being here, especially PE. Looking back now, it was a fantastic time for me.”
Year 11 GCSE PE student, Alex Bowsher who trains at Adam’s former swimming club in Tilehurst said: “Seeing him and what he has achieved makes me want to push myself to reach my potential.”
Alongside his medals, Mr Barrett also achieved the world’s second fastest split time for butterfly in the medley relay event – a time only bettered by the most decorated Olympian to date, Michael Phelps.
Head of PE, Tony Blinco, who taught Adam during his seven years at the school; was delighted to see him return to the department to inspire current students.
He said: “He is the first ever student of the school to have competed at a major sporting championship. Adam is a perfect example of what can be achieved with talent and a dedicated and committed approach to training. He is a great inspiration to all our students.”
The school are very proud of Adam’s career and wish him every success with future championships.
