Golf day at De Vere Wokefield Park Golf Club in Mortimer raises thousands for man Micky Denny lost to Motor Neurone Disease
Eighty-three golfers played in a charity game in memory of friend and local golfer Micky Denny.
De Vere Wokefield Park Golf Club, near Mortimer, was the spot for golf day in aid of Motor Neurone Disease Association West Berkshire.
They raised just shy of £9,000 for the man described as a popular sportsman.
Mr Denny – a Reading man who worked at energy firm SSE in Thatcham – died of Motor Neurone Disease in July last year at the age of 63.
In 2019, Mr Denny inspired SSE’s biggest ever charity fundraising campaign at its Thatcham and Reading offices.
His efforts resulted in a £5,373 donation to help families affected by the progressive disease that affects the brain and spinal cord.
Friends of Mr Denny turned out far and wide – including as far as Barbados – to play a round of golf and bid for auction prizes.
“We had a fantastic day,” said one of the organisers John Mann.
“And it was really well supported.
“It is the legacy of the man.”
Mr Mann also praised the golf course owner at De Vere Wokefield Estate and its director of golf Jamie Anton for their generosity.
This was the second event in Mr Denny’s honour at the golf club and it surpassed last year’s total raised for the same charity.
MND Association Reading and West Berkshire publicity officer Jane Gilbert said: “The support for Micky’s family and our vital work helping local people affected by MND was truly incredible.”
