Golfers pitch in to raise more than £9,000
The Adam Clayton Golf Foundation was set up in 2009 in memory of Shaw golfer Adam Clayton who died from a brain tumour in 2008, aged 23.
The charity was established a year later to support young golfers struggling to pay for equipment, lessons, club membership and competition fees.
The event, now in its fifth year, saw 124 golfers in teams of four take on 18 holes at the Donnington Grove and Country Club on Friday 19, raising over £3,000.
An additional £6,000 was raised at a charity auction with prizes including a three-day break at The Sheraton Algarve and a 2013 Masters flag signed by Justin Rose.
The money will go towards sending young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to the Algarve for a golfing scholarship in February and the foundation will be holding a golfing day in October to select potential candidates.
Adam’s father and founder of the foundation, Chris Clayton, said: “It was a fantastic day. The sun was shining, everyone enjoyed themselves and the amount raised was phenomenal.
“The golf day is an opportunity to remember Adam and to raise money to support young golfers who are struggling with the financial burden of the game.
“The Foundation is our way of putting something back into the sport that Adam loved so much.
“Every year has been more and more successful and five years on the legacy that has been created shows how much love and affection people had for [Adam]. He was one of a kind and he did so much for local charities.”
Mr Clayton also said that parents or friends of young golfers seeking a scholarship could contact the foundation for advice.
