Good report for The Ilsleys
Ofsted inspectors have rated The Ilsleys Primary School as good, although several areas have been downgraded
THE Ilsleys Primary School has been rated as good by inspectors, but has been downgraded in several areas.
The Ofsted report stated: “The continuing improvements are the result of the headteacher's determination and commitment to strengthen the life chances of all pupils. Pupils achieve well and attainment in English and mathematics is now above the national average at the end of Year 6. Strategies to improve writing have been implemented successfully.”
However, it noted that pupils' spelling was weak and, in areas such as pupils' behaviour, attendance and spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, for which the school achieved outstanding grades in 2009 and 2006, it has been rated just good.
Headteacher Kate House said that overall, she was delighted by the report and that the fall in grades could be explained by changes in the inspection criteria. She said: “Ofsted introduced a new revised framework from September 2009, which came in after the previous inspection of May 2009. This included revised criteria upon which they now make their judgements and this undoubtedly explains the fluctuation in the areas from outstanding to good.”
West Berkshire executive councillor for children and young people, Irene Neill (Con, Aldermaston) said: “This was a positive report that rightly highlights the successful teaching.”
