Goodbye but no final farewell
The Watermill has seen many actors over the years but there is one who has, without doubt, graced the stage more than any other. Miss Helen Watson, who after 25 years of shows and probably nearly 400 performances is directing and appearing in her last Seasonal Sauce at the theatre.
“I have so many happy memories of being at The Watermill,” she said. “I remember in the early years, when huge parties all dressed in period costume and some of those audiences will never be forgotten.
“There have been some people, and I don’t mean actors, who have been totally outrageous, so involved were they with what has been going on on stage.
“It is the audience that makes our show; we need them as much as they need us.”
“I wish I knew how many actors and musicians have been part of my company over the years; it must number 100 at the very least. I’ve loved working with them and many have become great mates. Many of them asked to be part of this last ever Seasonal Sauce so it’s been difficult selecting the final seven.’
“For this show I’ve revamped two medleys, both part of my Music Hall history from way back in the 70s, an old favourite send-up which I haven’t done for years, new satirical material plus songs performed by some favourite guest artists and new talent. All shows are memorable but I do want this one to be the best ever.”
The final Seasonal Sauce runs from January 30 to February 9 and features two special performances. The Top Hats and Tiara Gala on Friday, February 1 is for those who like to dress-up in period clothes – anything from the Musial Hall era to the 1970s; and just like the good old days the best dressed win prizes.
On Friday, February 8, there is a mulled wine and mingle evening when audience members can meet the cast. And anyone who books a post-show matinee tea will meet the Hostess with the Mostess, Miss Helen Watson herself.
This maybe the final Seasonal Sauce but not the last time Helen will be seen at The Watermill.
