Goring pub/restaurant scoops Waitrose national award
Customers nominate good value establishment
A Goring pub/restaurant is celebrating after scooping the Waitrose Good Food Guide Reader's Restaurant of the Year Award, thanks to a nomination by customers.
Beating off stiff opposition - including London pubs and restaurants - The Miller of Mansfield, in the High Street, owned and run by husband and wife team, Mary and Nick Galer, (pictured) was today (July 30) named the overall winner of the Waitrose Good Food Guide Reader's Restaurant of the Year Award.
The Galers previously worked at Heston Blumenthal’s The Crown and The Hinds Head, in Bray, but opened their own restaurant just over a year ago and with a great value menu, which includes a dish and a drink deal costing just £12.50 - which helped to seal their win.
Mrs Galer said they had adopted a "very straightforward,"approach to dining and continued:
"We serve traditional British food cooked with the best ingredients we can find, in a professional but friendly setting.
There are thousands of other restaurants out there, but we hope this sets us apart from the rest. Winning the award’s been a huge morale boost for our staff, and it reflects all the hard work they've poured into the business since it started 15 months ago."
Elizabeth Carter, editor of the Waitrose Good Food Guide Editor said, while trained inspectors carry out all their reviews, they also relied on readers to flag up eateries that might otherwise be overlooked and continued:
"The Miller of Mansfield not only offers great food and great value for money but also has a fantastic sense of community.
Successful eateries sometimes get so popular they can lose their place in a community, but the Galers cherish their locals with special low-priced deals.”
Now in its ninth year, the award attracted an overall 18,000 nationwide nominations, after calling on diners to name their favourite local eatery in March.
