Green light for festival

Up to 2,000 people expected at "family friendly" music festival near Ecchinswell

PLANS for a large pop music festival near Kingsclere and Ecchinswell in September have been given the green light.

Expected to accommodate around 1,500 to 2,000 people and advertised as a “family friendly” affair, the weekend festival on September 3-4 has been organisedby Woolfstock Festivals Ltd and will take place at Isle Hill farm, Sydmonton Road.

Licensing authority, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, this week said Woolfstock had been granted permission earlier than anticipated to hold the festival.

A spokeswoman for the borough council Charlotte Hammond said on Monday: “I can confirm that the licence has now been granted after objections were withdrawn. The hearing on August 26 has now been cancelled.”

Woolfstock spokeswoman, Ipek Ozerim, said the borough council had been happy with their plans and added: “Last week everyone withdrew their objections, so the licence was

automatically granted.”

She said organisers were very excited following the decision.

The rural site on Watership Down lies close to the Sydmonton estate of Andrew Lloyd-Webber, but a spokesman for the famed music impresario,James Harvey, said last week

that the festival was a private matter and therefore not one the estate would wish to comment on.

Ms Ozerim said a smaller scale, free festival last year took place at the same site.

She said the ‘invitation only' event had proved hugely popular and ticket sales of around 750 to 1,000 are anticipated for this year's event, although there is capacity for up to 2,000.

Consultations had been held with the police and fire officers, local authorities, and parish councils in Ecchinswell and Kingsclere.

“The terms of the event license are very strict with respect to event safety and noise pollution, which will be continually monitored during the event both on and off the site, to protect festival goers and neighbouring residents alike,” she said, adding that it would move

to a larger venue next year.

With tickets priced at £50, the festival's musical line-up includes: British Sea Power; 6 Day Riot and Tom Jones' backing singer, Elsie, along with free camping, food stalls, fun fair rides and fortune tellers, afternoon tea party and midnight dance arena.
