Greenham car fire suspected arson and leads to gas leak discovery
Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) spokeswoman, Nicole Targett, said one pump from Newbury Fire Station was called at 5.06am to a car fire in Laurel Gardens, off Deadmans Lane.
The blaze was extinguished by one firefighter wearing breathing apparatus using a hose reel.
Firefighters closed this incident at 5.41am, but whilst at the scene, discovered a damaged external gas pipe.
Six nearby houses were evacuated as a result, as gas was discovered to be entering one of the properties.
Thames Valley Police spokeswoman, Lucy Billen, said police were called at 5.16am to the car fire, under investigation as a suspected arson.
The gas leak was reported after this fire she continued, adding it was not known at this stage if the gas leak was linked to the fire.
