Greenham man exposes himself in Thatcham street

Man bailed for watching pornography in broad daylight

A WOMAN walking her dog came across a man watching porn on his mobile phone while committing a sex act.

The incident happened in daylight in a busy Thatcham street, Newbury magistrates heard.

In the dock on Thursday, May 5, was 42-year-old Noel Stephen Slattery of Burys Bank Road, Greenham. It was not the first time he had been arrested for a sex offence, the court was told.

Joanna McGlew, prosecuting, said: “Around 10.30am the victim was walking her dog down the path when she heard noises she associated with porn. She saw a male with his penis in his hand, actively masturbating while holding a mobile phone on which he was watching pornography with the other hand.”

Mr Slattery admitted intentionally exposing his genitals, intending that someone would see them and be caused alarm or distress, in Agricola Way, Thatcham, on April 18.

He has no prior convictions but has received a police caution after admitting a similar offence, magistrates were told.

Phil Kouvaritakis, defending, said it was 15 years since his client had received the police caution.

He added: “In this latest instance, the arresting officer opined: ‘I believe medical or psychological intervention is necessary in order to prevent more serious offending’. I concur with that. The probation service have agreed to provide a report.”

Magistrates agreed, ordering pre-sentence reports on Mr Slattery, who was released on unconditional bail until May 27.

Court clerk Judith Lock, legal adviser to the magistrates, said: “Signing on the Sex Offenders’ Register may well become an issue. However, that won’t be dealt with today but at the next hearing.”

Addressing Mr Slattery, presiding magistrate Ian Martin said: “We have ordered a pre-sentence report on an all-options basis, including custody.”
