Gridlock returns to Newbury and Thatcham

Temporary traffic lights on the A4, near the Mercedes Garage, saw traffic stretch back along the A4 to Thatcham, adding nearly 30 minutes to drivers journey times.
Council work signs say that the works are to be carried out from July 8 until July 13.
However, the council website says that the work will begin on July 11 and finish on July 24 to allow BT to install and remove cabling and power ducts, as part of the Broadband Direct UK project.
West Berkshire Council's shadow executive for Highways, Keith Woodhams, (Lib Dem, Thatcham West) said: "Many motorists will be appalled at the long delays and congestion caused by the road works on the A4 London Road, opposite the Mercedes Showroom over the weekend.
"The traffic lights were there, the barriers were there, but not a sign of any workmen repairing the road. In fact I could not see why the barriers remained in position as the road surface looked untouched."
Mr Woodhams said he would be questioning the council as to why the lights were installed on a busy weekend when no work took place.
