Groundsman calls it a day after 41 years

Francis Westall had been looking after the recreation ground since he was approached by Shaw-cum-Donnington Parish Council in 1971.
The ground was only leased at this time but was purchased by the council soon after, in March 1974, and ever since Mr Westall ensured it was kept in good condition for all its varied users, including the cricket club and Newbury Ladies Football Club.
The Recreation Ground also helped in Donnington village’s successes in winning the Berkshire Best Kept Village competition in 1979 and 1983.
Owing to ailing health, Mr Westall has now reluctantly handed over the reins.
To mark his contribution to the parish, the council presented him with shopping vouchers and a Christmas hamper at a small presentation just before Christmas.
Shaw-cum-Donnington parish councillor Mauline Akins said that the council wished him a happy and healthy retirement.
