Hair-razing, dart-playing fundraisers bring in £1.7k

Darts players who take part in an annual knockout competition to raise money for a local hospital have now raised more than £10,000 in 12 years after their latest event on Good Friday.

Beenham Club hosted the 12th Annual Alec Waters Memorial Darts Knockout on Friday afternoon, organised and sponsored by Alec’s wife Sylvia and family.

The club runs the fundraiser each year in memory of Mr Waters, aka Acer, who was known for his love of darts. He died from a heart attack aged 62, in October 2002, after playing a game of darts at the Beenham Club, and the family has organised the darts knockout there every Good Friday since 2003.

All proceeds are donated to the cardiac unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. This year, the group donated more than £1,700 from the tournament, a double head shave and a raffle.

Going under the clippers were Mo Morris and Lee O’Neill. Mr Morris had tinted his hair a different colour each month in the run-up to the challenge.

Alec’s daughter Helen Waters said of the event: “The knockout is always popular and attracts many local players, some county and super league, as well as patrons of the club, most of whom knew Alec personally.

“Although they come to play darts, most will be attending as a mark of respect to Acer and his love of darts.

“We know that, like all hospitals, any funds they receive are vital to help them continue to provide the excellent care and support to patients and relatives for those unfortunate enough to suffer from cardiac problems.”

The men’s winner in the tournament was Jamie “Shady” Clifton and the runner-up was Snowy Appleby. Ladies winner was Carol Bowers with Helen Waters as runner-up.
