Hair today, gone tomorrow for local mum

Katherine Stevens, aged 36 of Speen Lane, will be shaving her locks on Saturday, April 27 for her “Hair Today…Gone Tomorrow” campaign, with all funds raised being donated to Cancer Research UK.
In 1999, Mrs Stevens lost her mother, Hilary, aged 54, to bowel cancer and in December 2011 her oldest school friend Diane Gernetzky also fell victim to skin cancer.
As well as donating any funds raised to Cancer Research UK, Mrs Stevens, a voluntary vetinary nurse at Coach House Veterinary Surgery in East Woodhay, will also be donating her hair to The Little Princess Trust, a charity that gives real-hair wigs to children affected by cancer and the effects of chemotherapy.
She said: “In the latter part of 1998, my sister and I were told by our mother that she had bowel cancer.
“As with everyone who has been touched by this horrendous disease, we were in shock. We thought we had a few months with her, we had three weeks.
“She lost her battle to cancer...Our world was immediately consumed by devastation.
“Whilst I cannot change the past, I can try to make a difference to the future.
“It is for Mum and Diane that I do this, for all those sons and daughters that will grow up only with the memory of their parents, for all those grandchildren who will never meet their grandparents.
“I do this for all those who have fought, for those who continue to fight and those that have overcome cancer.”
So far, Mrs Stevens has raised £1,750.
