Hairdresser brings 'unique looks' to Newbury
A Nigerian beautician has brought something new to Newbury.
Her African hair salon, Chikala Hair and Beauty, has landed in Newbury's Kennet Shopping centre and offers a unique range of services.
Before coming to Newbury, owner Chicka Cameron-Taylor opened up her first salon in Nigeria 10 years ago.
She said: “Right from when I was young I was always very conscious of my appearance. I loved having a unique look, I always loved braids.
“One day I realised I could do it without even learning. It was a gift. I could make my own hair.”
She added: “I also love to care for people. I love giving people attention so I thought let me try doing this."
The part-time carer at Apex added: “I do African braids. They originated from Africa but they’ve been accepted by all cultures and tribes.
“I have Indian and Lebanese clients now. Braids are open to everyone of every race.
“There’s a very good market for this salon, there no one else doing this in Newbury.
“Before, clients had to go to London or Reading and they got discouraged because of the distance.”
She said that she hopes to expand the business, which opened on July 11, and is considering offering nail services too.
“Back home in Nigeria I do the nails weaves and braided wigs,” she added.
“I think there’s a big market here for African braids in Newbury.
“I like that it is busy here but still peaceful. I don’t have any intention of moving from here.”
