Burghclere Primary School receives £5k in Tesco Golden Token competition

A village school PTA has secured a £5,000 grant to enhance its outdoor learning area.

The Friends of Burghclere School received the money after winning Tesco’s Golden Token competition.

The competition, part of Tesco’s Stronger Starts initiative, supports thousands of local community projects and good causes across the UK.

Friends of Burghclere School treasurer Megan Burroughs said: “We, as a school community are so pleased to have won the Golden Grant.

“The facilities and resources that it will enable us to provide for the Burghclere school children will have an immeasurable impact.”

School administration manager Vanessa Pummell added: “The spaces are designed to promote wellbeing, reflection and a love of nature.”

The school wishes to thank all members of the community and shoppers who voted for it, and to Tesco (Newbury) for making the project possible.

Head of Communities for Tesco Claire de Silva said: “We’re delighted that Burghclere Primary School children can benefit from a little extra help for their outdoor playground.

“At Tesco, we provide over £8m of Stronger Starts grants to thousands of children’s schools and groups across the UK every year.

“As a special boost, we give a Golden Grant to areas across the UK twice a year which resulted in an additional £5,000 for Burghclere Primary School and we wish them all the best with their project.”

Customers vote for a local project by placing a blue token into a voting unit in their local store.

The most blue tokens, signifying a local children’s project, receive a £1,500 grant, the second £750 and the third a £500 grant.

The programme is open to all schools, registered charities and not-for-profit organisations, with priority given to projects that provide food and support to young people.

Applications for further Stronger Starts grants are welcomed.
