Hampstead Norreys Primary School claims top prize at St Gabriel’s School annual maths challenge on February 6
St Gabriel’s School recently hosted its annual maths challenge, welcoming more than more than 20 teams of gifted Year 5 pupils from local state and independent schools across North Hampshire and West Berkshire.
The event, which took place on Thursday, February 6, provided an afternoon of engaging and thought-provoking mathematical challenges for participating pupils, designed to inspire young minds and foster a love for problem solving.
The team from Hampstead Norreys Primary claimed the top prize, with Hungerford Primary closely following as runners-up.
This year’s competition was organised by the Mathematical Education Innovation (MEI), a charity dedicated to improving lives through advances in maths education.
The MEI created an exciting dragon quiz, where teams of four pupils worked collaboratively to solve a series of mathematical conundrums.
For each correctly answered set of questions, teams were awarded a piece of a Chinese dragon image.
The ultimate goal was to build the longest dragon, with the team answering the most questions correctly emerging as the winners.
St Gabriel’s Junior School head Pete Dove said: “It was a fantastic afternoon, filled with excitement, teamwork, and mathematical brilliance.
“Seeing so many young minds fully engaged and enjoying the challenge was truly inspiring.
“Every pupil should be proud of their efforts, and we extend our congratulations to all the teams who took part.
“We are grateful to the MEI for delivering such an innovative and stimulating competition.”
