Historic White Hart in Hamstead Marshall will soon be shutting its doors – for now
The White Hart in Hamstead Marshall will temporarily close its doors this month – until early next year.
The historic inn is no longer economically viable, claims owner Stella Coulthurst, who has decided to close the pub from Monday, October 24, until March next year.
Ms Coulthurst took over in April 2011 and spent £720,000 refurbishing the then derelict pub, which was open to serve customers within three months.
The pub, which employs a dozen staff, installed a brand new hospitality IT system this year.
But with rising energy bills, which also affect its customer base, the venue cannot justify staying open.
Ms Coulthurst explained she would have to charge customers £25 for a plate of fish and chips to turn a profit. She currently charges £15, therefore loses £10 every meal.
A spokesperson for West Berkshire Campaign for Real Ale explained the present situation of pubs in West Berkshire, saying: "Generally, for a number of years, there has been no interest in freehold pubs other than for alternative use.
"Unfortunately, this has impacted on sole traders that have invested all their money and time in them and require to sell them to fund retirement.
"The days are well gone when tenants could build a pub up and sell the lease at a premium."
The planned closure means the pub will be terminating its Saviour Pennies loyalty club scheme, so members are encouraged to redeem their points before October 24.
