Happy 18th birthday today Hampstead Norreys leapling

Born on February 29 and hence known as a leapling, Elliott Oldfield (pictured) couldn’t wait to come of age, with the date firmly marked on his calendar this year as February 28 (Friday), the last day of February - or so he thought.
He was taken aback however, to discover UK law stipulates he would not legally be 18 until today - Saturday March 1.
“I think the law is a bit daft as he was not born in March but never mind,” said his mother, Tracie Oldfield.
The former Kennet school pupil, currently studying engineering at Newbury College, while working part-time at TK Maxx in Newbury was, she said, slowly adjusting to the idea and likely to enjoy celebrations with family and friends today (Saturday) instead, adding:
“His birthday is a family joke - as he is still only four!”
In the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, a person born on February 29 legally attains the age of 18 on March 1 in the relevant year.
