Harrods state-of-the-art distribution centre officially opens in Thatcham

Equipped with the latest warehousing technology, the centre will receive luxury merchandise from all over the world before distribution to Harrods outlets.
The building at Thames Valley Distribution Centre in Mill Lane was opened by managing director of Harrods, Michael Ward, and Thatcham mayor, John Boyd (pictured).
Purchased in May 2011, the site will service the Knightsbridge store, airport boutiques and Harrods expanding e-commerce operations and will provide the backbone for the retailers’ future growth.
The move will create a range of new jobs for the local area across management, office, service, processing and driving functions with half of the centre’s 180 employees being hired locally.
The rest transferred from Harrods Osterley Distribution Centre.
Mr Boyd welcomed Harrods to the town and said: "I am delighted to welcome Harrods to Thatcham’s growing business community.
"The new distribution centre will provide jobs for locals and act as a catalyst for further growth.
"In addition, I am confident the local community will benefit as Harrods has already shown its support of Thatcham’s charitable endeavours.”
Harrods group distribution director, Dawson Parker, said: "The opening of Thatcham is a key part of Harrods growth strategy to prepare the supply chain for the future.
"Thatcham has great transport links, a rich pool of talent and the local government has provided us with the support to create a world class distribution centre."
