Headley road re-opens after collapsed water main
Repair works of five days completed
A HEADLEY road was re-opened yesterday (Sunday) morning, after a collapsed water main forced a five day closure of the road.
Southern Water confirmed a burst and collapsed water main forced the closure of a stretch of the Ashford Hill Road through the North Hampshire village of Headley.
The road was closed at the junction with the A339, and had remained closed for five days since last Wednesday (Nov 2), including over the weekend, due to repair work, before re-opening at 10am yesterday (Sun), Southern Water have today confirmed.
Problems ensued for drivers in the area over the five days, including school buses and those driving to Ashford Hill Primary school and others trying to get to Ashford Hill with Headley Community Shop, situated in Thornford Road, Headley.
Villagers also reported low water pressure in the area during the repairs.
The closure of the arterial route to Tadley also complicated the daily commute for AWE Aldermaston workers.
Access for residents living on the road was allowed throughout the works.
The Ashford Hill Road was closed during the five days between Tan House cottages, where the water mains collapsed in Headley, and the steel and metal works.
The remaining stretch of Ashford Hill Road - which runs through the village of Ashford Hill - remained open throughout the repairs. according to Southern Water.
Southern Water released the following statement last Wednesday (Nov 2):
"As part of the proactive leak detection work across our region, we received a high flow alarm – which alerts us to unusually high water flows - on the 4 inch diameter mains pipe in Ashford Hill, Headley, in the early hours of Wednesday 2 November. Following our investigations, we isolated the main and discovered that the problem was far more complex than originally thought, as the location of the main (opposite Tan House Cottages) is very deep and the main had collapsed.
“Our team worked through the night to fix the issue and the pipe was finally repaired at 2am this morning. However, as this is a complex problem, a great deal of reinstatement is needed in order to fully complete the repair and make sure the road is safe for traffic to use.
“We apologise to everyone affected by our work and thank them for their patience."
