Heathrow expansion to increase rail capacity on Great Western Main Line

If the runway is approved, it will bring with it improved rail links to Wales and the west via the Great Western Main Line, which runs through Reading, Tilehurst, Pangbourne and Goring and Streatley, as well as links to the south and south west through Southern Rail Access and the north of England through HS2.
Combined, the total rail capacity is expected to treble from 5,000 seats per hour to 15,000 according to those behind the scheme.
The news came as part of Heathrow’s expansion plans, due to be submitted to the Airports Commission tomorrow (Wednesday).
It is a revision of expansion plans announced in 2013.
Heathrow officials have said that the third runway would be complete by 2025 if approved and would bring other advantages, including the creation of 100,000 new UK jobs and at least £100bn of UK economic benefits by connecting all of the UK to global growth.
Reading West MP Alok Sharma said of the news: “The continued success of Heathrow is absolutely vital to the economic future of Reading and the wider Thames Valley area.
“I welcome Heathrow’s revised expansion plan, which would provide new jobs and add economic benefits to the UK.”
