Hero traffic warden foils robbery
Meet Alastair Job, a civil servant and crimefighting hero who foiled an attempted robbery at Newbury Library.
A woman was sitting in the library on Wednesday afternoon when her phone was snatched by a man who then fled towards Newbury Market Place.
Responding to the cry for help Mr Job chased the perpetrator and another man down the alleyway through the Market Place.
A quick-thinking taxi driver who saw the incident parked his vehicle to block the escape route before helping Mr Job apprehend the men.
“The thief and the other man immediately gave themselves up,” he said.
“I’m very grateful to the taxi driver who helped and then made sure I was OK to march the men back to the library. There we were able to confirm nothing else from the lady’s handbag had been taken.”
He contacted the police using his radio and the two men apprehended were taken away for questioning.
The West Berkshire portfolio holder for highways, David Betts (Con, Purley-on-Thames), praised the actions of Mr Job and said the council was proud of him.
“We know our officers are committed to helping keep our streets safe and Alastair has demonstrated how this can go beyond the call of regular duties,” he said.
