Reading Magistrates' Court: Calcot woman is rail cheat




A WOMAN has been landed with a £460 bill for trying to cheat on her rail fare.

Carmel Howes was due to appear at Reading Magistrates' Court on Friday, August 5, where she was charged with travelling on a Great Western Railway (GWR) service at Reading on Wednesday, February 16, without having paid her £25.75 fare, and with the intention of evading payment.

But the 20-year-old, who lives at Birkhall Close, Calcot, did not turn up.

The case went ahead without her and was found proved in her absence.

Ms Howes was fined £220.

In addition, she was ordered to pay £180 costs, plus a statutory victim services surcharge of £34.

Finally, Ms Howes was ordered to pay GWR £25.75 in compensation for the lost fare.
