Highclere cyclist wins medal during race for charity
Arthur Boulton, aged 10, cycled the approximately 290-mile distance from Highclere to Lands End in six days, accompanied by his father, Chris – a keen cyclist and co-owner of the Newbury based bicycle hire business, Totally Bikes Ltd.
After setting off from Highclere on August 3, he took a break after the first stage - Highclere to Frome - to take part in the British Cycling South Region Circuit Race
Championships at Castle Coombe, on Sunday August 5), where he came second in the under-10 race, winning a silver medal.
He then continued on into Ilchester, in Somerset and Exmouth, Devon, crossing Dartmoor in pouring rain, before arriving in Liskeard, the first stop in Cornwall.
The penultimate stage was from Liskeard to Truro and finally onto Lands End, where he arrived at 2pm on August 9.
Arthur initially wished to raise £500 for Arthritis Research UK and the British Heart Foundation – as two of his grandparents suffer from arthritis, while another close relative has previously undergone heart surgery, but far surpassed this target, with a running total of over £2,200.
His mother, Jennifer Boulton, said she and his father were she said “Immensely proud,” of their son, adding: “I can honestly say that we didn't have one day when he said he didn't want to do any more.”
Arthur is a pupil at the independent Thorngrove School, Highclere, and trains with the Palmer Park Velo Club, Reading.
Currently he is ranked in the top 20 nationally in road and track cycling for his age group.
