Hindu group Bharati Shakha Newbury holds debate on the dangers of AI technology




A Hindu community group organised a debate on the emergence of artificial technology (AI) as part of UK Parliament Week earlier this month.

Bharati Shakha Newbury held the event at St Nicolas School on November 17 and Newbury’s deputy mayor Andy Moore attended the debate.

The topic was ‘Is AI harmful to the human race?’ and at the end of the debate, there was a vote.

The group speaking for the motion won with a margin of 11 votes. There were 41 votes for and 30 against.

Bharati Shakha member Sanjeev Agarwala said: “Members of Newbury Bharati Sakha prepared well and enthusiastically participated in the discussion both for and against the topic.

“The deputy mayor who himself was from a technical background was quite impressed with the way the debates were conducted.

“He was also quite impressed by the civility of the debaters and appreciated the very interesting points raised by the debaters both for and against the motion.”
