Jack of Newbury talk planned at Bradfield

A talk will be held on the legendary Newbury textile merchant, John Winchcombe II (1489-1557), known locally as 'Jack of Newbury'.

Dr David Peacock will lead the talk, organised by Bradfield Historical Society, at the Bradfield Cricket Club Pavilion on Monday, February 27, at 7.30pm.

Riding off the back of Newbury's prosperous textile industry, Jack of Newbury rose to fame as one of England's leading clothiers, employing hundreds of local people.

He has left his mark on Newbury in a number of ways, helping to rebuild St Nicolas' Church in Bartholomew Street.

Part of his timber-framed house still survives in Northbrook Street.

All are welcome to attend. No advance booking is required.

Entry is free, but donations are appreciated. Parking is available.
