Hockey club membership soars following Olympics

This was no clearer than on Saturday’s Open Club Day, at Henwick Worthy Astro, where there was a good turnout of returning players, prospective players and curious passers-by.
The annual open day is an opportunity for all to socialise before the season starts, and this year was a roaring success.
The day was characterised by a mixed tournament, which climaxed with an Olympic- style penalty shootout, instead of the traditional penalty flick to secure the Reds a 5-3 finish.
After the game, everyone was treated to a barbecue and drinks and the chance to grab a goody-bag provided by Olympic Team GB.
The men’s club captain, James Gaitskell, was pleased there was a good return of old members to the club and commented that they had been swamped with enquiries as a result of the Olympics, and the media coverage that hockey received.
Two new teams have been formed this year owing to these increasing numbers; the 5th men’s team and the 3rd women’s team, which will be used primarily to progress the juniors.
