Family-run store's £90,000 refurb to compete with rivals

A FAMILY-run store in Speen has rebranded following an extensive refurbishment.

Ann Rai and her husband Roy have run Brummell Road Stores for 27 years.

However, they feared that the opening of a new Co-op convenience store just down the road would have a negative impact on business.

Instead of throwing in the towel, Mr and Mrs Rai decided to take action by spending £90,000 on the refit.

Brummell Road Stores, which is now called The Best One, boasts a modern, sleek interior with new tills and now offers more fresh produce and hot drinks to take away.

To celebrate the refurbishment, Mr and Mrs Rai invited customers along to a launch event, where the mayor of Newbury, Julian Swift-Hook, cut the ribbon.

Mrs Rai said: “I just want to say a big thank you to all of our loyal customers and those who have helped support us over the years.

“We have had a lot of positive feedback on the new look.

“It [the opening of Co-op] is going to affect us badly, but we thought if we can bring ourselves in line with the big boys then maybe we have a chance.

“You can either complain and throw in the towel or just go for it. So we decided to update our shop rather than just give up.

“We hope this refurbishment will modernise ourselves and give customers what they need. We enjoy what we do and don’t want to go.”

A petition against the Co-op store, which will open next to the Starting Gate pub, attracted more than 500 signatures when plans were submitted.
