Homes without water as teams 'to work through the night' on burst main
The road was closed approximately at about 2.30pm when a water main burst, causing water to flood the B3421.
Irate drivers have taken to Twitter and Facebook to express their anger at being gridlocked as Thames Water excavated the road and shut off the main to stop it gushing.
The firm has said teams are to work through the night to resolve the problem, however properties in the nearby area will be without water for an unknown period of time.
Hambridge Road is currently closed in both directions at the junction with Hambridge Lane.
Spokeswoman for Thames Water, Natalie Slater said: “We have engineers at the site at the moment.
“Some properties are without water or are suffering from low water pressure.
“We are confident that water will be restored to homes and businesses this evening.”
It is the second time today the road has been closed as at about 1.50pm earlier today a three vehicle crash caused pile-ups.
The incident involved a blue Austin Mini, a purple Ford Fiesta and a green VW Polo.
South Central Ambulance attended and took one woman to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital suffering from torso injuries.
The road was re-opened at about 2.30pm following the accident, but had to be re-closed within minutes after the water main burst.
Police spokesman, Leo Tarring, said no arrests had been made with regards to the road traffic collision.
