Horse rescued from Kennet and Avon Canal at Sulhamstead

Animal led to safety by firefighters

A HORSE was led to safety by firefighters from a Sulhamstead canal this morning (Mon).

Five appliances were called at 10am to a brown horse, stranded in about five feet of water in the Kennet and Avon Canal at Tyle Mill, near the Spring Inn on the A4.

Firefighters encouraged the horse to get out of the water and led it to safety, where it was checked over by its owner.

The horse, which was cold, but unhurt, was then returned to its field.

It was not known how the horse got into difficulty in the water. Frefighters said the owner thought it may have slipped whilst drinking water.

Appliances called to the scene included the heavy rescue unit from Caversham Road, and two from Dee Road and Whitley Wood fire stations, plus another two appliances from Mortimer Fire Station, along with the control unit from Maidenhead.

Firefighters left at 10.45am.
