Bewley Homes reveals plans to build 260 homes on land south of Tadley

A housing developer has revealed its plans to build approximately 260 homes on land south of Tadley.

Bewley Homes is seeking an allocation for land off Skates Lane in Basingstoke and Deane’s draft Local Plan and it is preparing an outline planning application for the homes, 40 per cent of which would be affordable.

The mix of homes comprises one, two, three, four and five-bedroom homes and the development will be within “a high-quality landscape setting”.

Bewley Homes revealed its plans for the Skates Lane housing development at a public exhibition at The Hurst Leisure Centre on Tuesday, June 20.

Bewley’s senior land manager Matt Roberts said: “Our public exhibition attracted considerable interest from locals as we expected, and we received some positive feedback for our plans to build a high-quality development.

“Our scheme for Skates Lane will help Basingstoke and Deane meet its housing shortfall, as well as provide much needed affordable housing for local people who want to stay in the area.

“If our application is granted, we will be partnering with a local housing association to deliver that element of our S106 obligations.”

Bewley has stated that the development would supply homes for first-time buyers and young families in Tadley, and it will also provide open green spaces and new walking and cycling routes.

The housing developer also stated that the development would “bring forward wider infrastructure improvements”.

Mr Roberts addressed some of the public backlash to the plans.

On social media, several Tadley residents have voiced their concerns that the proposed development, with some believing that the large influx of new residents would put a strain on local infrastructure.

Some also disagree with the countryside location of the proposed site, believing it to be a place of natural significance.

In reply, Mr Roberts said: “Tadley hasn’t seen much development in recent years, so we understand some of the opposition to new homes, but we are a local housebuilder who has been building in the Basingstoke region for over 30 years.

“Our reputation is vitally important and as our headquarters are based in Tadley, this would be a flagship development and a lasting legacy for the company.”
