Housing plans for Greenacre leisure on display

People can view the proposed development at a public exhibition today (Friday)

MEMBERS of the public can today (Friday) view plans for a housing development at the site of Newbury leisure club Greenacre.

Bloor Homes Southern, a Newbury-based house builder, intends to submit a planning application to redevelop the leisure facility in Greenham Road, Newbury, which would see houses built on the current site.

The public exhibition is being held at the Hilton Hotel, Pinchington Lane, from 3pm showing a series of plans and illustrations and giving people the opportunity to ask questions and submit comments.

Yesterday, club members were able to view the plans.

The leisure club has been the subject of intense speculation over the past year, when a plan to sell the site to housing firm Rivar Homes was rebuffed by centre management.

Talk of the plans has again spread rapidly amongst the local population and users of the centre who are worried that the facilities will be lost. These include the only indoor tennis courts in the county, which are used by hundreds of youngsters all year round and are considered to be among the best courts in the South of England.

It is thought that some 47 homes, 17 of which are low-cost housing, are being considered for the site.

However, Bloor homes land director Howard Pearce has moved to allay fears that the facilities will be permanently lost.

He said: “The proposals will include private and affordable housing together with the provision of replacement leisure facilities, including a new purpose-built building, with the capacity to extend for future requirements, and the relocation of the existing covered and open courts from the current Greenacre Club site.”
